Tell me about Warin Faust and this space WWII craziness.
Oh BOY! Okay so I made this up in 2009 during art history class so pay no mind to it being totally ridiculous… and I wanted to do a “smaller” story than the ones I was working on at the time (Cathexis, Sivern)
Warin was a skilled Messerschmitt BF 109 fighter pilot for the Luftwaffe during WWII, not because he necessarily wanted to be, but he wasn’t too good at much else and he was able to make good use of his keen eyesight and steady hands, and while not a meek person, he preferred to follow orders rather than give them. He racked up kills somewhere in the 300s as a flying ace and later was pretty shocked at how he was able to disassociate so… adeptly, to have stolen so many lives. He didn’t relate to the Nazi party’s ideals but it wasn’t like he had many other options, and he lived with his dad and his siblings and some cousins and none of them wanted to put the others’ lives in danger, so they stayed, and kept their heads down.
Anyway, Warin ended up with his plane getting shot down by a Russian fighter, and irreparably wounded his left eye, so he couldn’t go back into flying planes anyway… He was caught by Russian soldiers and brought to a facility run by Russians and Americans. In this alternate universe, the atomic age and everything that entailed was developing much earlier, and with it the obsession with space. Since WWII was shaping up to be a really nasty, catastrophic deal beyond anyone’s expectations, some organisation’s apocalypse theories were secretly becoming quite popular, so their goal was to make ships suitable for space flight and send intelligent, capable, but expendable people into space to seek out alternatives to earth. Their sights were set on Mars but the ships were fitted with everything they needed to go past the nine planets if they had to. So Warin, along with eleven other “expendables”, were each given a ship (run by an AI), briefed extensively on how to survive, and were wished all the luck in the world and were launched into space while the war waged on earth.
The story is about Warin dealing with his ever-weakening faith, his relationship with THE DECEMBER (the ship/the AI, a… mothering but distant “figure”), musing about his old life, and what happens when he meets up with other expendables… the meetings range from being really terrifying to tragic to enlightening. Mostly floating around being sad and whatever in the 40s-50s and beyond(???????????) there’s something of an end, but it’s… a very open/vague thing.

Joobr and my mom left to go do suspicious things and I am here alone OmO!!! Entertain me!!
Yawwwwwnnn! Here’s a thing, I think I’ll do more. For Cathexis-era Dragon (25 out of 50somethin yrs, for reference)
—
Name: Drakemenya Greison, aka Dragon Grey
Best friend: Setsuna, Loki (guardian), Dobki (sister), Griffin (brother— deceased)
Sexuality: a/demisexual
Gender: cis dude i guess
Relationship status: alone like a lonely lily on a hill
Ideal mate: someone, anyone, who he has comfortably developed a strong bond with, who he isn’t embarrassed to be around, who can stand to put up with him and can kick him in the ass if he needs it. Physical attraction is not needed nor expected, and that’s okay, as long as there is a trusting, easing, motivating kind of support that doesn’t end in total dependency. There are/have been very few of these relationships, if any.
Crushes: nah
Favourite colour: Purples, greens, blues, really saturated colours… not pastels, not a big fan of brown.
Turn-ons: uh… not… really anything…
Favourite food: Cereal and other breakfast snackeroos. Also noodle things and lots of fruit and veggies. (He’s vegetarian bordering on vegan, not that he knows it.)
Favourite music: Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Sufjan Stevens, Matthew Good, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Jethro Tull, Jimmy Page, Jeff Zentner, Staind, ROME, Pinebox Serenade, Murder by Death, Okkervil Fiver, Fleet Foxes, The National, Malcolm Middleton, uhhhhgghfhhdjfkgg mostly Pink Floyd.
Biggest fear: Sucking and being miserable forever, never offering anything to the world or, more importantly, to his friends, leaving behind trails of regret or fueling the regrets of others… basically being a bad, no-good dummy of a person 4 life
Biggest fantasy: Being a really cool buff guy, finding clothes that fit right, maybe kissing someone and not wanting to throw up after!
Bad habits: General self-destruction, nailbiting, knucklecracking, facepicking, gesticulation, stammering, forgetting/replacing words, being super brash without any foresight, lacking in empathy or giving waaayyy too much of a shit… he is a bad habit that’s it the end
Biggest regret: Not applying himself more, not making himself more available, the stuff that happened with Griffin, hurting/scaring Setsuna (and everyone else haha), not taking better care of Dobki, not treating Loki with more respect, failing to be honest with Alex, blah blaaaah more’s racked up later
Best kept secret: well for a while it was what happened with Griffin. Uh, I guess he keeps a lot of his thoughts private (especially as he gets older, he becomes way more quiet and less outwardly pathetic) like he definitely doesn’t broadcast his orientation or body issues, his heritage (well on earth anyway… in eden he’s not too secretive about it since he’s being a scamp on purpose), his fear of water… I guess maybe his thing with Chimera is a well-kept secret.
Last thought: “Huh… damn… I have no idea where cat feet go when they lay down… can I make mine do that.” (A gentleman and a scholar, this one.)
Worst romantic experience: all of them bad horrible terrible. One time a girl kissed him and he doubled over, retching. Not really romantic since she was just his friend who took pity on him haha but yeah, she was showing him how to kiss and… that. Another time he had a girlfriend who came to the wrong conclusion that he’s gay and was really violent about it. Another time he had a super nice girlfriend but she succumbed to hypothermia. Alex was rad but Dragon was not and their relationship was built on mutually unstable ground and their brief sexual encounter was just… the worst. And I dunno about Chimera ha ha ha, make up your own opinion about the nature of their nonsense…
i could say more sex-related things but this is about ~romance~ and the two are not always related, like in this instance
Biggest insecurity: his appearance, his weakness, intimacy, ignorance…
Weapon of choice: Ardea! And Ardea’s powers, like pyrokinesis and such. Usually, a lightweight, black ceramic, machete-style sword, a cheaper edition of the Empire’s “Kabod Flints” line. It’s standard-issue for government workers even in such a low class (the idea for the make/material was originally stolen from crude Aterhae weapons whoops how fitting, most modern government officials use steel)
Role model: Setsuna!! The coolest toughest guy around!!! Wow!!! 8O8
I wrote this down as soon as I woke up so it’s all rough but yeah, this *v*

I dreamt I was seeing out of the eyes of a kind of a sketchy nobody sort of dude (“MARTIN KANDINSKY”) who works in a mortuary preparing bodies for burial and entertains a cooking hobby on the side… who worked for a big family of cannibals. His cover job was to work as an undertaker, but his main job was to be a chef for the cannibal family, preparing the bodies in fancy dinnerschemes. He worked in a huuuuge kitchen in an otherwise unseemly warehouse or something, with the highest quality equipment and implements. He himself isn’t a cannibal, but he’s definitely a weirdo.
At one point, he lapses into some kind of unpopularity and a rival culinary group for their own freaky family ends up swiping one of his commissions, and he goes in and sneakily replaces the bodies with nasty rotten flesh or somehow induces a faster decomposition, but the people don’t realise since they stole the meat from him they figure it must be in top quality, but all their people eat it and get sick and they’re out of a job.
(At one point in the dream there was a scary demon and I don’t think I’m going to put that in but I want to remember it for something else… it was definitely weird, it ihad long fingernails but on the fingernails were eyes and it was a big smoky weird kinda thing with lots of whispy tendrils…)
When the guy gets mad he gets really smoothly scary. He’s kind of a noodly wimp generally but when he gets mad he somehow sets that aside and is really good at putting on an intimidating show, though of course he’s still a noodly little freako.
The chef had mostly-slicked back grey hair and was kind of short, at least shorter than other people, he wore a nasty apron, long gloves, and a button-down shirt. His kitchen was super big with long tables and ovens and fixed with all the finest wear. He works alone, rather than with a group, even though preparing bodies is a much bigger task than normal meals, and his cover job as an undertaker definitely lends itself to his other job. Although not a cannibal, he sometimes finds himself looking at both the living and dead with newly-acquired standards and looking for details he wouldn’t have before, thanks to working for this big cannibal family, which kinds of squicks him out sometimes when he catches himself doing it.
Rich family that happens to be cannibals— eats their enemies to keep things more on the hush-hush? Wants to marry one of them so in exchange he has to work for them— they seem him as a grocer Yeah— he’s been in a long-time relationship with one of the daughters, “FRANCIS” (she was instructed to seek him out on purpose because of his job, but she ends up liking him a lot regardless) maybe they live slightly more north and she finally gives in and lets him come down to meet them where they live, in the bum-ass nowhere of the south in a big old plantation house.
Conflict: Has an enemy who finds out about his work and infects the meat with something and makes everyone sick? got someone else to do the work for them for some reason?

What are the schools like? If there are things that we would know as schools I mean.
The education system the Empire has built needs a lot of work. One can excel if they posess a particular learning style and can adapt to the strict program that rewards physical strength and those who meet their standards for “intelligence”… Eden, having first gained control in an austere part of the world, is in general fixated on survival skills even in the modern age. It shows in everything from academia to fashion, focusing on what is necessary before paying attention to baubles like creativity and what may be aesthetically pleasing. The government tries to spare any expense but is slowly becoming more lenient and willing to give money to music and art programs in the hopes that these programs will appeal to the countries they aim to shake hands with, and to create new forms of theocratic propaganda.
So. If you excel at math and critical reading and public speaking and strategising and sports, you will probably do well. There aren’t toooo many post-secondary options yet aside from the three major law schools, a school for music, two schools of medicine and science, and smaller vocational schools for everyday careers. And of course military school, for whatever branch you hope to serve.
The quality of education really depends on the location of the school. Obviously schools in richer areas will have more qualified staff and better resources than those in the poorer districts, however, the richer districts have a more biased teaching style since they often employ members/former members of the Council, working doctors, sometimes even the angels or military personnel. The purpose of this is to implant successful Empire puppets to have a model for students to work towards, all the while praising faith in the Council to be of the utmost importance for success. People in poorer districts may not have access to these people nor their agenda, which I guess is good in some ways, but they are still aware of what they’re missing out on and those “models of excellence” are strived towards nonetheless even if they’re not being spoon-fed the same information.
There’s little help for people with disabilities/learning disabilities. There’s a very very crude form of sign language which few people choose to learn. Dyslexia is not considered a disability and is looked at as a stupid personal failing/lack of effort. ADD is not over-diagnosed but is over-medicated in the richer districts. Access to medication is sparse in the poorer ones. Eden may be very modern in some ways but for medicine, they are very quick to judge and deal with it in either too simple or too dramatic ways.
So Griffin did very well in school despite sucking at sports, because he was a very quick learner, conformed to expectations, and had no evident learning disabilities. Whereas Dragon sucked amazingly at most things besides his Humanities classes, despite extremely poor reading and writing comprehension (he did better with notetaking in lectures etc., learning by listening) and music, even though he can’t/couldn’t read sheet music.

You mentioned in answering an earlier question of mine that there was still a lot of unexplored territory. What kind of cool stuff is out there?
Oh, all sorts. There’s a lot of rocky, mountainous terrain that no one has been too motivated to check out. And lots of eerie, flat plains still home to roving beasts that’d appear prehistoric to us. The oceans are especially uncharted, most of the trading relationships between countries are due to them being in close proximity. Lucky for Aterhaelm, it’s an island country so even if it wasn’t rendered Switzerland, there wouldn’t be too big an inclination to re-invade. The armada’s ships can travel short distances over water but were made specifically to handle the polar north, so there’s that.
The southern hemisphere is especially unknown, the south pole has never been explored. Vorlacha is I think the most populated southern country, its terrain very lush and mountainous combined with flat, stretching beaches of black volcanic sand. There are island areas beneath Mhet Va that no one’s claimed yet, probably similar to Mhet Va’s rolling frosted hills and trees that grow right down to the shore, with odd clearings of perfectly clear pools… similar in some ways to Aterhaelm, but Aterhaelm is way flatter and Mhet Va harbours some of the biggest dormant volcanoes and has more erratic weather/seasons… there are places of constant rain, and really desolate, arid areas. Belsene has an island off of it that’s almost all sand and rock, yet somehow has extremely tall trees shooting up from cracks in the earth, and no one has settled there after first documenting its existence due to the weird landscape.
There are tonnes of old drawings and monuments, like I said before, scattered around the world and even in Eden’s empire there are plenty of tundras unexplored and forests left alone out of disinterest. They want to expand to where people already live, and don’t want to waste resources trying to populate mysterious outlands… not yet anyway, but the foreign affairs office is coming up with schemes to make this happen. Even planning schemes to revisit the few lasting remains of Empyreus Corvaxis, but they’re not saying why.

34 for Dragon!
Ah jeeze, so many things, everything, he is comprised entirely of being embarrassing and embarrassed. Some big ones are… Comments about his appearance even if/especially if they’re neutral or positive, references to romance/intimacy, commenting on his misuse or mispronunciation of a word, his perpetual self-reminding of stupid shit he’s done/being reminded by other people, uh he’s a total klutz so that’s embarrassing… yeah. He’s like a cat, he’ll do all kinds of dumb stuff and be aware of it but as soon as someone points it out he frantically tries to recover, deny it, and eventually spiral into verbose self-deprecation. And then get embarrassed that he said anything.
Very cool guy we have here.

If you've thought much about the future of your world after your characters have died, are they remembered/have they had a significant impact overall? That sort of stuff. For any of your worlds too I guess! I just wanna know about everything.
WELL NOW, WW (and maybe Sivern and others, idk, those are pretty isolated at the moment) continues long after various main/”important” characters have died, so lots of my thoughts are actually canon haha. It’s a little sad to think about and potentially spoileriffic so I don’t usually expand much on it in public. But yeah, there are some people who remain influential long after their passing. One or two in particular are considered very important and are revered for some time, but whether they’re actually important is up to each individual… some aren’t so keen on these folks.
Our ideas hopefully outlive us as positive and negative examples to learn from, and can be easily tainted and forgotten depending on who’s around to document them. My characters, although important in the context of the story’s spotlights, are really just “normal” people for the most part, not revolutionaries or martyrs (well…… haha) [for any cause greater than themselves] and the people who remember them best are the ones who were close to them. Few manage to touch the world entire simply because they are/were dealing with smaller-scale issues that may have felt immeasurable at the time. Making comments on the world, or what they’re aware of, while struggling in small pockets. Or something. Their battles are significant to them but small to the universe, basically, and some may be revered for their deeds in those times, but maybe to only one or two people. Important, but small.
But yes, some do survive as different kinds of inspirations. And some that people thought were dead and were previously used as inspiration turn out not to be. This goes for a few worlds! I’m just not sure how much I should say about it.
Since this is less spoilery and more fun conjecture… I know Ciaran & Bathory (of Sivern) made a significant impact on their country(ies) for uhhh very different reasons! Ciaran was one of the first vocal enviromentalists/biologists and thankfully for him, he was old enough during their age of enlightenment to have made a difference in how people relate to nature. Sivern the country is in a fitful puberty, very eager to grow up and modernise and in doing so they forgot much of the reverence older generations had for the land. Ciaran sought to compromise. Bathory just sought to destroy ha ha ha, well, sort of… she made many significant impacts as both a “good” and “bad” figure. She also reminded people of how things used to be, for better or for worse, and during her regime she reinstated some old civil rights laws, which was decent of her. She was crazy but she was smart and just because she had flaws does not mean there wasn’t any truth to what she was aiming for! Hoho! Ulysses, too, remains an important figure, though his lasting effect was much quieter.
i uh found this
“Jesus, man…” Setsuna shook his head, leaning back away from the railing and more towards the door of the roof entrance. “I couldn’t make this stuff up if I wanted to. And I try! I mean this is, this is straight out of… anything. Rasputin’s got nothing on you.”
“Rasputin?”
“Oh, yeah. One of my. I make up people. Like for stories.”
“Oh!” Dragon exclaimed, “That’s awesome! Can I see sometime? Or did you already show me some? I don’t think I’ve been introduced to Rasputin. I need one proper, you know. Also,” he suddenly started, raising a finger. “What is ‘jesus’?” he asked. Setsuna waited for some clarification. “You say it a lot. What does it mean?” Setsuna looked at him dejectedly, and Dragon did the same.
“It’s a curse,” Setsuna finally said. “Like ‘damn’ or ‘shit’. Well. I mean. It’s not really. But it is now. Uh. It’s… Jesus. It’s just that. You’d say ‘jesus christ’ for more emphasis. It was a guy. I mean, supposedly. But now you say his name when you’re pissed, I guess.”
“That’s weird. Does that happen to everyone?” Dragon seemed deeply invested in this. Setsuna wanted to get back to discussing what the hell this Empire was all about, or even discussing his characters.
“No, it doesn’t happen to everyone, I guess Jesus was just a special guy.” Setsuna was not about to explain the story of the Christ Child to Dragon, who would probably either refute it entirely or, maybe, take it to be absolutely true. Setsuna noticed it could really go either way, with him.
“So you say it when you’re pissed,” Dragon affirmed. “Alright. I like it. Jesus. Jesus!” he exclaimed loudly. “You say it so often, I thought maybe it was a nervous tic.”
“Yeah. No. Hey, before we knock down the language barrier, let’s… get down from here, okay? I’m starting to wig out,” Setsuna said, standing up and stepping away from the edge of the roof, hair and clothes windswept. He reached a hand back for Dragon, and the skinny man took it gladly, climbing onto his feet. The two of them walked inside the roof doorway and descended the stairs to the ground floor.
